There is only one travel rule that I follow consistently. That rule is that you should always get travel advice from a local. This is the best way to experience the city in the way that the local people experience it. It is also the best way to avoid wasting money on things that aren’t worth doing even though they’re listed in the guide books.
I don’t actually always meet a local person when I travel. In fact, I often get the advice from someone I know before I even go on the trip. For example, my friend Kelly is originally from Chicago so I would ask her about things to do in Chicago if I were to plan a trip there. If I can’t find a local then I find someone who has been to the destination more than once. My friend John goes to San Francisco all of the time so I consider himĀ a good resource regarding San Francisco attractions even though he doesn’t actually live there.
If I really can’t find someone in my own circle of friends who is familiar with a destination then I head to the Internet. I look for blogs and forum posts from locals about the place where they live. This is the key to good travel. It’s worked for me so far!
