The history of London and the rest of England is extremely dynamic, diverse and almost as interesting, well for some people even more so, than the contemporary aspects. And that statement is not intended to mitigate, criticize or diminish the great contemporary culture of London, but rather to stress the dynamics of its past. It has played a major role in the development of world countries and has also been a world political powerhouse for most of the past two thousand years. You can choose almost any time period or century in the past and it will be filled with incredible political and social intrigue. And one of the most interesting periods for the London hotel guests also happens to be one of the city’s most political as well as culturally and artistic dynamic times. This of course refers to the English Renaissance, the majority of which time saw the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First.

Queen Elizabeth herself has an extremely dynamic and sometimes controversial biography. She was the daughter of the notorious King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She became queen at the young age of twenty five and reigned until her death at the age of 69 in 1603. She was the longest reigning monarch in English history and was succeed to the crown by her cousin James of Scotland. During her reign England began its golden years of culture and theatre and this was the time period when great writers like William Shakespeare, Ben Johnson and Christopher Marlowe were writing. The period ushered in a new style of theatre and performance and these writers were at the forefront of the transition. The period also saw countless plots against the queen and it was full of enormous political controversies. Secret societies, spies and the underground world were all part of the social elements of the time. And much of this period is still evident in the city today.
