Architecture and Solar Power

I am a graduate student in architecture. I’m especially interested in residential solar power systems. Recently my professor assigned us a class project and broke us up into teams. Each team is supposed to design energy-efficient homes which are affordable.
My father is a scientist who has been interested in home solar systems for a very long time. He rigged up solar cells at home and I remember him giving lectures about alternative energy when I was a kid; he became a solar power consultant for the state government a few years ago.
So I guess you can say I’m following in his footsteps. Solar technology has become more sophisticated over the years and more installers are obtaining Leed certification, so I’m confident that the cost will decrease considerably in the future, making it possible for more buildings to be outfitted with solar panels. And the federal and state tax incentives will help considerably.
My architecture class is very enthusiastic about our projects. We want to enter our designs in a national competition for energy-efficient home designs. I talked with my father about what we’re doing, and he is impressed with our ideas. He commented that conservation is not just about compost anymore.
