Tribal tattoos still show belonging

While currently working on a writing assignment for one of my college classes, I decided to do some research on tribal tattoos because I’ve always found them fascinating; mostly the tattoos that were found in drawings of ancient peoples and civilizations. Clearly, those body modifications showed an individuals sense of belonging to a tribe or community.

What interested me was how the history of tribal tattoos related to the growing phenomenon of individuals in the first world who are tattooing more and more often with these so called tribal tattoo arm bands, and other types of design.

Tattoos have a simple appeal for most people in today’s world. We like the way the tattoo looks on us which therefore reinforces our self image. With respect to unique and individual tattoo designs, we are able to express a connection to mysterious elements and ancient activities.

Western society no longer requires us to perform rituals that might include the permanent marking of our skins, like those of years gone by. Still, though, there are groups within our culture that are joined voluntarily and whose members agree to obtain certain permanent markings.

The differences between these modern tribes and those of ancient times are actually quite minimal. The process is about belonging to the group and demonstrating ones commitment.
