Have you ever stopped to wonder why people, especially kids, dress up in the wide variety of Halloween costumes that you see out and about on October 31st of each year? It is believed by most scholars that the origin of the costume for Halloween didn’t actually evolve until the 20th century and was developed from the earliest Celtic tradition of wearing masks and large garments to scare away evil spirits on All Hallows Eve. From this tradition came the much more playful version of Halloween masks, although in North America scary costumes are still some of the most popular. Every year it is possible to see Dracula, ghosts, witches and ghouls happily running through the neighborhood.

Unlike the ancient celebrations, modern Halloween is for fun, treats and entertainment. Everyone wears masks and costumes from young toddlers to specialized men’s costumes and women’s Halloween costumes, masks and props. Costumes now focus on the entertainment aspect of the holiday, not as much on the spiritual side of keeping evil at bay or ensuring the safety of the home and property from dark forces. Some of our more traditional Halloween activities such as bobbing for apples and lighting a candle in a jack-o-lantern can also be traced back to Roman and Celtic traditions, making a great history lesson for the kids.
