All That I Didn’t Think I’d Need

I was a cocky teenager. Many teenagers are, I suppose. For me, the cockiness faded away quickly but now and again I notice things that remind me of just how silly that cockiness was. The most common experience that causes this is when I need something that I always just assumed as a kid I would absolutely never need.
For example, it happened when I went to my Washington DC dentist and he told me that he was going to refer me to a Washington DC cosmetic dentist for Washington DC dental braces. I never thought that I was going to need braces. I had great teeth. But I also thought I’d never have to have my wisdom teeth pulled out because they never bothered me and it turned out that they were wreaking havoc in my mouth and eventually caused me to need braces to fix my adult smile.
This isn’t the only time that the realization has hit me that there was a whole lot that I didn’t know as a kid. It comes back regularly because of different incidents like this. And you know what? Sometimes it makes me miss the confidence that I had about things back then! I thought I knew it all and now I just realize I know next to nothing. I guess that’s called growing up.
