Shopping for Plus Sizes Shouldn’t Be So Hard

A complaint I frequently hear from friends who wear plus sizes is that the clothing industry is highly biased against them.  Not only is it nearly impossible to find cute clothing in plus sizes, it is almost as difficult to find clothing in plus sizes at all.

A lot of clothing stores, particularly trendy clothing stores, don’t seem to have clothing in plus sizes at all — and if they do, the selection is extremely limited.  Discount clothing stores such as Ross and TJ Maxx are more likely to carry plus sizes, but they often aren’t in very attractive styles.

Plus size Halloween costumes are also very difficult to find.  Since Halloween is primarily thought of as a kids’ holiday, most stores carry a very small selection of adult costumes, and an even smaller number of those are for plus size adults.  Often the only things you can find in your “size” are wigs and costume hats.

Thin people often complain about seeing ill-fitting clothing on plus size people.  I agree, it doesn’t look so good when heavy people wear clothing that is too tight or fits badly, but honestly I think  a great deal of the problem is how difficult it is to find attractive clothing that fits.  If our clothing industry weren’t so biased against the plus sizes, we probably wouldn’t have such a big problem!
