A Well-Lit Christmas

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was a lot of fun. What I want to share with you though is something funny that happened this year. Everyone in my family received a present that had something to do with lighting. That’s odd isn’t it?
Our light-based Christmas presents were as follows:
- I received energy-efficient light bulbs for the house. My mom gave these to me because she knows that I’ve been thinking about getting them for myself for awhile.
- The kids got a really cool science experiment kit. It’s based on engineering stuff and even teaches them how to build a small metal halide ballast!
- My husband received a book about different modern lighting options. It’s mostly about low pressure and high pressure sodium light bulbs but it includes a bunch of other lighting information as well. A co-worker gave him this odd gift.
- We all got candles as stocking stuffers. That’s a form of light too!
It’s so strange that we all got these wacky light-based presents this year. Of course we got lots of other stuff as well but what a weird coincidence don’t you think? I’d love to find out what you got for Christmas this year. Did anyone else get lighting gifts?
Santa was Good to Me This Year

I would have to say that my two favorite things about Christmas would be the food and the gifts. I know that many people will think it is bad of me to mention either of these things (since I am supposed to be thankful for family and friends), but when I started this blog, I vowed to be honest about my thoughts, so that is exactly what I am thinking.
But for me this year, I would have to say that Santa was especially good to me this year. I wasn’t sure that he would be since I asked for something that the elves are not known for making (airsoft guns), but I thought that it doesn’t hurt to ask, right?
So, imagine my surprise and delight when I looked in my stocking this morning to see a pair of airsoft pistols staring back at me. Let me tell you, I think I was in heaven.
But sadly, I won’t get to use them until the family leaves in a couple of days, so I will have to be patient. On the other hand, my wife will be happy – I have a permanent smile on my face.
Ready to Take Christmas Pictures of the Kids

One of the things that most parents do during the Christmas season is take pictures. In some respects they seem crazed, and take pictures of just about everything, but now that I am a parent, I can understand – I don’t want to miss anything.
We have put the responsibility of taking good pictures in the hands of our old Nikon camera for the past five years, and this year will be no different. I am almost embarrassed to admit it, but it is so old that it can’t even handle using a high speed compact flash card.
Even though it is old, it still takes wonderful pictures so I see no need to replace it. Sure, I would love a new camera, but it is hard to consider getting rid of it when there is nothing wrong with it.
Maybe my wife will get the hint that I would like a new one for Christmas, but I bet instead of a new camera, I’ll get some socks. So, I will not get my hopes up, but rather have faith that our camera will be up for the job for yet another year.
I couldn’t imagine not having pictures of the kids at Christmas – that is the reason that we celebrate it in the first place.
How to Focus on the Fun of Christmas

Christmas Day is almost here. Are you excited? If you’re like most adults then you are mostly excited but you’re also a little bit stressed out. There is just so much to do for Christmas when you aren’t a kid anymore.
Here are some tips to help you focus on the fun of Christmas:
- Get things done in advance. We’re running a little late to do much in advance but if you still have stuff that needs to be done before Christmas day then get on it right now.
- Put everything else out of your mind until Christmas is over. Sure you need to sign up for those Cisco training courses because your boss is requiring you to get your Cisco certification next year. But no, you don’t need that on your mind right now. Put it on the calendar for January and forget about it.
- Spend time with kids. It’s really easy to get sucked into the drama of Christmas when you’re venting with the adults in your life. It’s not nearly as easy to hate Christmas hassles when you’re enjoying the laughter and excitement of kids at Christmas.
- Lighten up. Things don’t have to be perfect this Christmas. Go easy on yourself!
