Learning at the Library

There is a line in the movie Good Will Hunting that says something about how you can get the same education that you would get from an Ivy League college just by spending your time at the local library. This isn’t entirely true since there are resources available to the college student which aren’t going to be available in the library. Still, the point that you can learn a lot just by reading is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Wandering through the aisles of a library can help us happen on to topics of study that we wouldn’t have come across any other way. You might find yourself in the caregiver resources aisle where there are alzheimer’s resources and other caregiver books. Becoming entranced in the subject, you may find yourself moving towards a new career path. Or you might just enjoy learning something that you didn’t already know.

With the Internet at our fingertips, we often forget about the value of going to the library to get an education. Try branching out from the traditional models of learning in schools and researching on the Internet and get yourself to a library now and then. Dare yourself to wander those musty aisles in search of something that you couldn’t even have known was there.

Planning Our Next Vacation

My husband and I haven’t been on a real vacation since our honeymoon, over a year ago — a "real vacation" being defined as a trip where we actually go someplace and get away from family and work.  We’ve been talking about taking another vacation in the spring, though we’re not sure yet where we’ll go.

We’ve talked about going to a few different places.  One we’ve talked about is returning to the resort in the Pocono Mountains where we honeymooned, though that would mean we’d have to book a car rental on vacation.  We’ve also thought about going to South America — both of us are interested in ancient history and architectural sights there such as the Aztec pyramids.

We’ve also discussed some destinations a little closer to home — for instance, a road trip to Mesa Verde.  We were also recently told about a guided tour at the Ute Mountain Reservation that is supposedly spectacular.

Unfortunately, as indecisive as we are being, we will probably have to book a last minute vacation, because we won’t make up our minds until then!

Romance in the Rockies

I met my husband in Banff, Alberta. Alberta is a Canadian territory that borders the Midwestern United States. Banff is located near the Rocky Mountain Range, and is well known for its skiing and tourism. I live in North Dakota, which, if you don’t know, doesn’t have any mountains or really much of anything else in it. Just huge, flat farms; the old prairie country. I won a Banff vacation package from a local radio giveaway, and so off I went. I spent a week in a rustic ski lodge along with a dozen other skiers. We’d come back in, one by one, from a day of sunshine and skiing, rosy from the cold air, breathing hard and smiling. The lodge specialized in mixing a drink called a Tom & Jerry. My name is Geri and there happened to be a man staying there named Tom, so we’d drink them by the fire, warming up, feeling cozy, and joking about it. After the trip was over we exchanged emails for a while and when he graduated from college he moved to North Dakota. Since then, we’ve tried more than a few Canada tour packages; there’s so much to see in Canada, and it’s all so unspoiled and real. We’ve been all over Canada now, from the Yukon to Montreal, and each one reminds us a bit of that first Banff ski vacation.
