What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

I don’t understand exactly what carpal tunnel syndrome is.  I know that it happens to people who type a lot.  I type about eight hours a day.  I have pains that shoot from my wrists and up my forearms.  My fingers don’t really hurt at all.  A friend at work said that it sounded like carpal tunnel.  Should I be worried?  What other carpal tunnel treatment is there besides pain meds?  I don’t want to take more medication than I already am.  I have trouble with my thyroid and the meds that I am taking for that are plenty.  Besides, I have to be very careful about what I take.  It seems like everything affects my thyroid.

Are there treatments that will actually cure or fix carpal tunnel or are the treatments focused on pain management?  I have a week vacation coming up next month.  I wonder if a week without typing will be long enough to fix the problem.  I know that I should make a doctor’s appointment to get it checked out but I just don’t want to.  I’ve been going to the doctor so much for my thyroid that I just really can’t deal with one more thing!  I’m going to look and see if there are any homeopathic or natural pain relief methods to deal with carpal tunnel.  Maybe I’ll be lucky and I’ll be able to find something that helps without having to go to the doctor.  If not, I’ll just have to deal with it and make an appointment.
