ringingHave you ever experienced ringing in your ears? Many of us have heard this noise a few times when we’ve listened to music too loud at a live concert. Now try to imagine what it would feel like to hear that noise all of the time? It would drive you nuts, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, this is exactly what happens to some people as they age. It’s a condition called tinnitus and it often accompanies the hearing loss that elderly people may experience as they get older.

Most people who have tinnitus end up getting used to it over time. Their brain adjusts itself and the noise essentially goes away. However there is a small percentage of people who have the condition and it never goes away. Luckily there is new treatment being explored which can help retrain the brains of these people so that they stop hearing the noise even though it’s still there.

It’s an interesting new treatment that requires certain technology. It also requires monitoring by a professional audiologist. If it’s successful then the ringing in the ears technically remains but the patient is able to ignore it so they basically don’t experience it anymore. What a relief that must be for these people!
