Toddler’s Dentist Relief

dentistry-2I have a four year old son who is deathly afraid of the dentist.  I don’t really understand how he developed a fear at such a young age but as soon as we would enter the waiting room at our family clinic, he would immediately begin kicking and screaming as if I was torturing him!  Living in Virginia at the time, I was lucky enough to have a sister who worked as a dental hygienist.  Taking my son to the doctor at her office was still difficult, but a little bit easier for him as he recognized his aunt’s face throughout his cleanings and check ups.  The day after my son’s third birthday, we moved to Washington DC where my husband had received a promotion.

I knew the whole charade of finding a dentist for the kid was going to have to start up all over again.  I looked into Washington DC sedation dentistry thinking this might be the answer to my problems.  I had heard through the grapevine that some of the best dentists in Washington DC worked at these cosmetic clinics so I talked with a doctor at one office about my son’s situation. He quickly directed me to another Washington DC dentist who specializes in children such as my son. Walking into the office I was immediately struck by the colorful walls, toys everywhere and friendly demeanor of the nurses and receptionists.  The place felt more like a nursery than a dentist office.  I brought my son in and he was perfectly content playing on the floor in the waiting area.  Taking him back into the dentist’s office though, I feared the worst. I was surprised to find the usually daunting reclining chair that usually sets my son off was actually a play rocket!

The dentist coaxed my son into sitting the rocket chair and he actually began laughing before the dentist asked him to open his mouth.  The whole appointment went without a single scream or tear.  To mothers out there who experience the same type of problems with their children, I would highly recommend looking for a dentist that specializes in children.  It worked for my son and now I am happy knowing he will have a healthy smile as he grows older.
