Your Bondsman Isn’t Your Friend

It is human nature to feel kindly toward someone just because they did something nice for you — such as putting up your bail bond.  But it’s important here to remember that your bondsman isn’t your friend — he’s more of a loan shark, someone who has leant you money but at a steep price.

Usually, in addition to the fee he charges you, a bondsman also requires you to sign over some piece of property — generally a car or a house — as collateral.  And if you skip court and the bondsman loses the money he paid to get you out of jail, he will come after you — just like a loan shark would if you didn’t pay him!  The only difference is that the bondsman is doing it legally — he’s going to bring you back to court, not torture or murder you.

If you are okay with this kind of thing hanging over your head, or if you really need to get out of jail, a bondsman should work out fine — just as long as you remember that they are not your friend.  Just go online and Google “bail bonds” with your area — i.e., “bail bonds Bakersfield” or “bail bonds Seattle.”

Just remember — don’t expect any favors — your bondsman is NOT helping you out of the kindness of his heart, but out of the desire to fill his pockets!
