The Letdown

When my family and I first moved into our new home, I had a big BBQ. Almost my whole family came-my parents, my brother, my two sisters and their husbands and kids and two of my close cousins and their wives and kids.

It was supposed to be homage to our childhood, when we used to have weekly Sunday BBQ’s for the whole family. I’d gone all out on the BBQ aspect of the house; I must have looked at all the outdoor kitchens known to mankind before I settled on mine. It wasn’t the most modern or expensive, but it was everything I wanted. Instead of one of the usual gas grill islands, I’d opted for a charcoal grill island-because when I was growing up, we always cooked on charcoal-with side burners, a fridge and a full bar with a wine cooler.

I was so excited to show it to my dad and ended up spending almost the entire day telling him about the outdoor kitchen and reminiscing about our old BBQ’s while we cooked. For years, my wife and I had been living in a little townhouse with no backyard, and to me, finally being able to have my dad over for a BBQ was one of the proudest days of my life.

In the end, even though I had a great time, it ended up being a bit of a drag. At the end of the night, my dad and I were sitting by the outdoor fireplace having a beer, and I asked him what he thought. Instead of raving about how proud he was, he just said it was really nice, but he preferred the simple setup from when we were kids.
