Many people are starting to make their own compost piles for use in gardening. This is a great way to recycle food scraps and to reduce the cost of fertilizing your garden.
Here are the basic steps to follow if you want to make your own compost pile:
- Choose a spot in the yard for your compost pile. It might smell a bit so choose a spot that’s not too close to close to the house.
- Collect compost materials from your yard. These materials include small branches and dead leaves. This doesn’t include grass though; grass can go in the next layer. Form a layer of these materials on the bottom of your compost pile.
- Add food scraps to the top of your compost pile. Coffee grounds, eggshells and vegetable peels can all go into your compost pile. Your grass can go on this layer too.
- Mix together the two different layers of your compost pile. Mixing is made easier if you use a compost screen designed for portable screening. This removes rocks and other debris while you sift.
- Add water to the mixture.
- Add more of the yard materials to the top of the pile. This helps to lock in the moisture that you added. It also reduces the odor emitted from your compost pile.
- Wait. Your compost pile will take 1-4 months before it’s ready to use in your garden.
