Every child craves a great birthday party. Children love to be the center of attention, and a birthday party is one of the best ways to guarantee this. Everyone there to see her and give her a present? Not to mention an opportunity to stuff herself on sweets? What child wouldn’t pass that up?
Many parents hesitate to have a birthday party for their child because of the expense. However, memorable children’s birthday parties don’t necessarily need to be expensive. Having your child’s birthday party at home or at a park is a great way to have a lot of fun for free. There are also many ways you can provide birthday party decorations at little or no cost, enabling you to decorate your free birthday party space for an equally good price.
Here are a few ideas for decorating cheaply for your child’s birthday party:
- Use home paper shredders and hole punchers to make confetti. Many heavy duty shredders and high security shredders shred in both directions, making really tiny paper scraps that are almost diamond in shape. For a little more interest, add to the mix some circular confetti from your hole puncher. You can keep those colored flyers that business often leave on your door or in weekly mailings, and use those to make perfectly free confetti. Or you can visit your local dollar store or Big Lots, and buy a bunch of colored paper at cheap prices.
- Make your own banner and streamers. Instead of buying a premade banner declaring "Happy Birthday," make one yourself. You can even enlist your child in this task — or, if you want to make it a surprise party, have the guests to come over and help beforehand while your child is out of the house! Instead of streamers, paper chains can be made with colored scrap paper, which you can often get free from colored flyers, or inexpensively at bargain stores.
- Use bedsheets, furniture, and other things around the house to create a theme setting for your party. If your child wants a princess-themed party, sheets hung as curtains through which kids have to enter can make a fabulous entrance for a castle; and white spray paint can transform the backyard into a racetrack for a Cars-themed party. Be creative and enlist your child’s help — kids often like homemade creations better than the storebought variety, anyway!
