Why Can’t the Band Stay at a Nice Hotel, Too?

It’s so weird how some universities really accommodate the pep bands that accompany college football teams—while others don’t.  My son is in the marching band at CU Boulder, and he travelled with the band when they played in the Independence Bowl in Louisiana.  The football team was put up in style completely across the river from the marching band.  For the marching band—not so much style.

And they really expected better.  When they travelled to North Carolina, they stayed at the Comfort Inn Hotel near Duke Medical Center if I remember correctly.  But this time, they were put up in a horrible part of town.  As an example:  a few members who were over 21 went out at 11 at night to go to a bar, but the whole area seemed to be darkened and locked down behind window bars.  They found a small liquor store open, and when they walked up to it, they saw that the only way they sold liquor was through a very small window opening, kind of like a cashier window behind bullet proof glass.  The person behind the glass said, “Seriously. Go back to your hotel.  It is very dangerous here.  You’re white.”  Now isn’t that nice?
