Learning To Delegate

I have always been a do it yourself kind of guy. When I started my business, it was a one man show. As the business grew I had to bring on additional employees though. At first I would pretty well look over everybody’s shoulders. I felt the need to be the decision maker on every little detail.

But the business continued to grow. I’m not complaining. It is a good thing when businesses grow. But I was at the point that I needed to work on my own delegation skills. I knew I had hired good people. It was time to cut the umbilical cords and let my best people start managing. And it worked out pretty well. Sure, there were some stumbles here and there, but the business continued to grow and grow and grow.

And suddenly we were at a crossroads when it came to record keeping. The only thing I was really over my head on was compliance with the way we were supposed to be undertaking this important aspect of the business. It’s funny in retrospect too. Here is the guy who felt the need to oversee every little detail and originally had trouble delegating anything about to outsource our document storage needs to a document imaging service! But I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Now it is just another in a long line of delegation success stories for the business.
