A Childhood Love of Avionics Becomes a Lifetime Interest

As a child, I was the only kid on my block to have a full collection of fighter pilot trading cards. I would trade with myself, pretend I was ejecting from a downed plane, and create forts with propellers over every corner of the house. But, it was the thought of flying, not diving out of a plane that truly captured my attention. I wanted to be an avionics expert and then maybe someday fly the plane myself.

Life takes odd twists and turns and somehow I ended up as a computer programmer, but that does not mean my obsession with fasteners and bearings ever faded away. I have been seeking out the exact same thing since I was 9 years old and I don’t feel I’ll stop any time soon.

To be truly devoted to a new hobby takes a lot of money though and my wife has made it clear that I am to be markedly more careful with the finances until I can actually afford the massive equipment and aircraft parts I want for the plane I’m slowly constructing on the property behind our home. I knew it would be expensive, but I had no idea just how much…not until she told me.
