Your Kids, Your Car And The First Day Of School

The first day of school is fast approaching (and has already come and gone for some students). If your child indicates that he’d rather walk to school than be dropped off, it could be because he’s embarrassed about the type of car that you drive. No one is suggesting that you go out and get a new car in order to help your kid be more cool in school but it’s not a bad idea to be empathetic about the situation and to agree to drop your child off around the block if it’s really a problem.

The things that make kids self-conscious don’t often make sense to adults. Your child may have no problem getting discount school supplies from the most uncool school supply store in your city but be unwilling to be seen with you if you’re driving a Prius or a Volvo or a VW van. You know that this is ridiculous and that the self-consciousness will pass but it’s not going to feel that way to your child.

There’s definitely a fine line to walk regarding how much to allow your kid to be embarrassed by you without addressing the concerns that you have about why your child feels this way. Just make sure that you err on the side of concern for your child’s feelings. The first day of school is not the day to insist that you pull the VW van up to the front of the school and wave goodbye loudly.
