Local Bandits Nab Car Signs

This is a slightly humorous story that I read in the newspaper while I was visiting Australia a few months ago. It started with a local prank in which a group of high school students started stealing window decals from local businesses. They stole special signs, prices, and various information from the windows to little effect and the ire of a few local business owners.
Apparently, getting away with it made the fellows a little more brazen because they upgraded their targets soon enough to include magnetic car signs and vinyl lettering from the sides of boats and large vehicles. They were taking full signs from off the sides of buildings and snagging neon beer signs from bars in outright thieving ways. The local authorities were both stunned and slightly amused that anyone would go to so much trouble to steal signs.
The boys were eventually caught when they saw a particularly good sign they wanted to take from the local police station. Suffice it to say, they did not realize that the police station does not actually close after dark like the other businesses they had been stealing from. They returned all of the signs they stole and spent a combined 500 hours of community service helping the business owners they stole from. It’s funny how even the most mundane things become targets for theft.
